Prerequisite: C grade average in English classes Related College Majors: Tele-Communications, Journalism Job Opportunities: Public Relations, news/sports reporting, broadcast sales. The Radio/TV
Production program provides a foundation for both performing and non-performing
roles in the telecommunications industry. Emphasis is placed on developing ideas into programs and commercials. Students develop scripts, prepare production budgets, and coordinate the
talents of production crews. After learning basic operation techniques of studio
and portable equipment, students edit their own rough footage into finished
products.
Students gain
hands-on video experience in the department’s television studio using TV
cameras, a special effect generator, studio lights, a teleprompter, video tape
editors, and character generators. Additional experience is gained producing two
regular programs for cable TV: Washington Township Magazine and The Overview
Show.
Radio experience
includes operation of audio consoles in production studios, tape recorders,
turntables, and CD players. Classroom exercises include broadcast sales
copyrighting, radio formatting, and personnel management. The student may also
be involved, both during and after school hours, in on-air broadcasting with the
Career Center’s FM station, WJEL Stereo 89.3.
Instruction and
testing is given prior to gaining the FCC Restricted License. News reporting
experience includes covering local news stories, reading Associated Press wire
copy, and adding live broadcasts from ABC News.
A small number of
juniors who excel are invited to return for a second year which includes regular
responsibilities on WJEL and the two cable-TV shows.
Prerequisite: Students must have earned at least a C in regular level English courses.

Potential Job
Opportunities: Areas where former students have found careers include corporate
video, industrial training, disc jockeying, news and sports reporting, broadcast
sales, cable TV industry, and marketing and public relations.
